She went on to graduate from the University of Bristol with a BA Honours Degree in English and Drama at the age of 21.

Keating's television career began in Northern Ireland, where she presented various programs, including The Video Picture Show, Channel One, and the music program Greenrock. Her big break came when she joined the Blue Peter team in 1986. During her time on the show, Keating undertook a range of thrilling challenges, including a trip to Moscow in 1987, swimming with sharks, abseiling down skyscrapers, and standing strapped to the top of a light aircraft while it performed aerial acrobatics.

After leaving Blue Peter in 1990, Keating joined BBC Radio 5, where she co-hosted an afternoon show with film critic Mark Kermode, titled A Game of Two Halves.
