FitzSimmons attended Carroll College in Helena, Montana, where he continued to demonstrate his exceptional skills on the field. During his college career, he accumulated 244 receptions for 2,698 yards and 21 touchdowns. His outstanding performance earned him second-team NAIA All-American honors in 2000 and 2001, as well as first-team All-Conference selection for all four seasons.
In 2002, FitzSimmons led the Fighting Saints to the NAIA National Championship with a 28-7 win over the two-time defending NAIA Champion Georgetown (Ky.). FitzSimmons went undrafted in 2003 but was signed by the Detroit Lions, where he played for seven seasons. One of his most memorable moments came on September 30, 2007, when he returned a kickoff for a touchdown to seal the Lions' win over the Chicago Bears.
