Founded a hospitality empire that revolutionized the hotel and restaurant industry, creating iconic brands like Travelodge and Little Chef. Known for his innovative approach to customer service and business strategy.
Charles Forte, Baron Forte, is a name synonymous with hospitality, entrepreneurship, and innovation in the leisure and hotels industry. This Italian-born Scottish hotelier is best known for founding the Forte Group, a multibillion-pound conglomerate that revolutionized the way people travel, dine, and stay.
Born as Carmine Forte on November 26, 1908, in Mortale, Italy, Charles was the eldest son of Rocco Giovanni Forte and Maria Luigia. His family emigrated to Scotland when he was just four years old, where he attended Alloa Academy and later St. Joseph's College in Dumfries as a boarder. Charles then spent two years studying in Rome, followed by his return to his family in WestonsuperMare, where his father ran a café.
At the tender age of 21, Charles undertook his main training in Brighton, where he managed the Venetian. This experience laid the foundation for his future success. In 1935, at 26, he set up his first milk bar, the Strand Milk Bar Ltd., which soon expanded into catering and hotel businesses.
During World War II, Charles was interned in the Isle of Man due to his Italian nationality. However, he was released after only three months and capitalized on the opportunity to grow his business. Post-war, his company became Forte Holdings Ltd, and he made a series of strategic acquisitions, including the Caf Royal in 1954.
The 1950s marked a significant period of growth for Charles' empire. He opened the first catering facility at Heathrow Airport and the first full motorway service station in the UK for cars at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, on the M1 motorway in 1959. He also purchased the Hungaria Restaurant in Lower Regent St. in 1955.
In 1970, Trust Houses Group Ltd and Forte Holdings were merged to form Trust House Forte or THF. This marked the beginning of a new era of expansion, with Charles' empire eventually becoming a multibillion-pound business.
Charles Forte's entrepreneurial spirit and innovative approach to the leisure and hotels industry left an indelible mark. His empire, which included Little Chef and Happy Eater roadside restaurants, Crest, Forte Grand, Travelodge, and Posthouse hotels, as well as the wine merchant Grierson Blumenthal, revolutionized the way people travel and stay.
Charles Forte's contributions to the hospitality industry were recognized with a knighthood in 1982 and a peerage in 1985, when he became Baron Forte of Ripley.
Today, Charles Forte's legacy continues to inspire entrepreneurs and hoteliers around the world. His innovative approach to the leisure and hotels industry, his commitment to excellence, and his entrepreneurial spirit have left a lasting impact on the world of hospitality.
