Barnett was born on February 4, 1988, and was adopted by Bob and Danee Barnett. He was raised on a sailboat near Longboat Key in Florida until the age of seven. He discovered his passion for theatre at the age of six and went on to perform in numerous operas and musicals with the Sarasota Youth Opera.
Barnett is a graduate of Booker High School and later attended the Carnegie Mellon Musical Theater Summer Program. He then went on to study at the prestigious Juilliard School, graduating from the drama program in 2010.
Barnett's breakout role came in 2012 when he starred as Peter Mills, a firefighter-paramedic, in the NBC drama Chicago Fire. He played the role for three seasons, earning him recognition and acclaim in the industry.
In 2018, he was cast in the leading role of Alan Zaveri in the Netflix series Russian Doll, opposite Natasha Lyonne. The same year, he was cast in the main role of Ben Marshall in the Netflix miniseries Tales of the City.
