A renowned musician and founder of the new age music group Mannheim Steamroller, known for creating a distinctive sound that blends classical and rock elements, especially popular during the holiday season.
Chip Davis, aka Louis F. Davis Jr., is renowned for founding and leading the iconic music group Mannheim Steamroller, known for their unique blend of modern popular and classical techniques. Davis is also recognized for composing the music for several C. W. McCall albums, including the 1975 hit song "Convoy."
Born on September 5, 1947, in Hamler, Ohio, Davis' family later moved to Portland, Ohio, and then to Sylvania when he was 11. He began piano lessons at the tender age of 4 and had composed his first piece of music by age 6. Davis' musical talent was nurtured by his family, with his parents attending the University of Michigan, where his father played clarinet in the university band.
Davis graduated from Sylvania High School and went on to graduate from the University of Michigan School of Music, specializing in bassoon and percussion. He played in the University of Michigan Symphony Band, following in his father's footsteps. After touring with the Norman Luboff Choir, Davis took a job with Omaha, Nebraska-based advertising agency Bozell & Jacobs, Inc., where he wrote jingles, including popular spots for Metz Bakery featuring the fictional trucker C. W. McCall.
In 1974, Davis founded Mannheim Steamroller with Jackson Berkey to showcase his unique blend of modern popular and classical techniques. The first album, Fresh Aire, was completed shortly after, but was initially turned down by major record labels. Undeterred, Davis founded American Gramaphone to release the album, which has since become the label for all subsequent Mannheim Steamroller releases.
Davis' success with Mannheim Steamroller and C. W. McCall earned him several awards, including being named SESAC Country Music Writer of the Year in 1976. His work on "Convoy" propelled the song to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1976, solidifying his status as a talented composer and musician.
Davis' passion for music is matched only by his dedication to fostering a sense of community and connection through his work. He believes that music has the power to bring people together and transcend borders, a philosophy that is reflected in Mannheim Steamroller's eclectic and inclusive style.
Throughout his illustrious career, Davis has written several books and composed music for various projects, including the Day Parts album. His personal milestones are a testament to his hard work, dedication, and innovative spirit.
