Chito Miranda is a Filipino singer and songwriter, best known as one of the founding members and lead singer of the popular band Parokya ni Edgar. With their unique blend of rock, pop, and humor, the band has been a staple in the Filipino music scene for over two decades.
Miranda attended the Ateneo de Manila University, where he met his future bandmates Gab Chee Kee, Vinci Montaner, Jeric Estaco, and Mikko Yap. During their high school years, they formed a garage band, known for their humorous performances and outrageous costumes. They eventually landed the role of front act band for the well-known Filipino alternative rock band Eraserheads.
After high school, Estaco and Yap left the group to pursue other interests. Childhood friend Buwi Meneses and schoolmate Dindin Moreno joined as bassist and drummer, respectively. The group was originally called Comic Relief, but they later changed their name to Parokya ni Edgar, a joke from their student days inspired by Jose Rizal's novel Noli me Tangere.
Parokya ni Edgar performed regularly in Club Dredd, one of the famous clubs in Manila during the height of the Filipino rock explosion. The band slowly gained popularity, influenced by foreign grunge acts such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. They were eventually signed by Universal Records after witnessing one of their performances at Club Dredd.
Parokya ni Edgar's debut album Khangkhungkherrnitz garnered a triple platinum award, cementing their status as one of the most popular Filipino rock bands. The band has since released several successful albums, earning numerous awards and nominations from the Filipino music industry.
Miranda is known for his close friendships with fellow Filipino artists, including Kamikazee vocalist Jay Contreras and rappers Gloc-9 and the late Francis M. He is also praised for his down-to-earth personality and humility, often interacting with fans and supporters on social media.
Through his music and public persona, Miranda has promoted a message of positivity, goodwill, and social awareness. He has used his platform to support various charitable causes, including disaster relief efforts and advocacy for social justice.
Chito Miranda and Parokya ni Edgar have left an indelible mark on the Filipino music scene, inspiring a generation of musicians and fans alike. Their unique sound and style have paved the way for other Filipino rock bands, solidifying their place in the country's rich musical heritage.
