Chiyonokuni Toshiki, born Toshiki Sawada on July 10, 1990, is a renowned Japanese former professional sumo wrestler from Iga, Mie, known for his unwavering determination and impressive career, spanning over a decade.
Toshiki was born to a Buddhist temple head priest, and from a young age, he showed a keen interest in combat sports, specifically karate. He even predicted his future as a professional sumo wrestler in the fourth grade.
During his junior high school years, Toshiki was an accomplished judoka, advancing to the top 16 in a national tournament. After graduating, he joined the esteemed Kokonoe stable, founded by former yokozuna Chiyonofuji, marking the beginning of his sumo career.
Toshiki made his professional debut in May 2006, but his journey was not without its setbacks. He missed four tournaments due to injuries, which led to demotions, only to fight his way back up the ranks. This pattern of resilience became a hallmark of his career.
One of his most notable achievements was winning the jonidan championship in the March 2009 tournament, where he secured a perfect 7-0 record. This victory propelled him towards a series of successful tournaments, ultimately leading to his top rank of maegashira 1.
Despite his accomplishments, Toshiki faced numerous challenges, including injuries that forced him to drop to the sandanme division in 2015. However, he persevered, staging a remarkable comeback that saw him rise through the ranks once again.
In 2019, he suffered another serious injury, which led to his demotion. Undeterred, Toshiki made a final comeback, although it was short-lived, and he eventually retired from professional sumo wrestling.
After retiring, Toshiki joined Kokonoe stable as an elder, taking on the name Sanoyama. His remarkable career, marked by determination and perseverance, serves as an inspiration to aspiring sumo wrestlers and fans alike.
While Toshiki's professional sumo career may have come to an end, his legacy continues to influence the sport, solidifying his place as one of Japan's most revered sumo wrestlers.
