Chris Morgan, born on November 9, 1977, is an English former professional footballer and football coach, renowned for his tenacious defending skills and impressive career spanning 16 years in English football.
Morgan attended Penistone Grammar School and played Sunday league football for Hoyland Common Falcons before beginning his professional career at Barnsley.
In January 1998, he made his debut for Barnsley under Danny Wilson in a 6-0 defeat to West Ham United in a Premier League tie at Upton Park. Despite being sent off in a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at Oakwell, he went on to make 11 Premier League and three FA Cup appearances in the 1997-1998 season.
During his six-season tenure at Barnsley, Morgan made a total of 212 league and cup appearances, scoring eight goals. In 2003, he signed with Sheffield United, where he was soon appointed club captain and named the club's Player of the Year in 2004.
Morgan played a crucial role in Sheffield United's promotion to the Premier League in the 2005-2006 season, although their stay in the top flight lasted only one season. He went on to make 279 league and cup appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals, and holds the club record for red cards with six.
After retiring due to injury in 2012, Morgan turned to coaching, serving as caretaker manager at Sheffield United over two separate spells in 2013. He then joined Chesterfield as first-team coach in December 2015 and Port Vale as a coach in March 2017.
