Born on October 10, 1968, in Manchester, England, Ofili grew up in a family of Nigerian immigrants. His father, Michael Ofili, left the family when Chris was just eleven, returning to Nigeria. This event would later influence Ofili's exploration of identity and cultural heritage in his art. He attended St. Pius X High School for Boys and later Xaverian College in Victoria Park, Manchester. Ofili's foundation in art was laid at Tameside College in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, before he went on to study at the Chelsea School of Art from 1988 to 1991 and the Royal College of Art from 1991 to 1993.
Ofili's early work was heavily influenced by the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Georg Baselitz, Philip Guston, and George Condo. His unique style, which blends resin, beads, oil paint, glitter, and lumps of elephant dung, has been classified as punk art. In 2002, Ofili married Roba El-Essawy, a former singer with the trip-hop band Attica Blues. The couple divorced in 2019. Ofili currently resides in Trinidad and Tobago, where he maintains a studio in Port of Spain.
In addition to the Turner Prize, Ofili has received numerous awards and honors, including the 1998 South Bank Show Award for Visual Art and the 2000 Paula Rego Travel Award.
