Born on January 9, 1920, in Brixton, south London, Clive Dunn was the son of actor parents and cousin to actress Gretchen Franklin. He was educated at Sevenoaks School in Kent and later studied at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London.
Dunn's acting career began in the 1930s, with small film roles in Boys Will Be Boys (1935) and Good Morning, Boys (1937). He also worked as a stage manager for a touring production of The Unseen Menace in 1939. However, his career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served as a trooper in the 4th Queen's Own Hussars.
In 1941, Dunn's regiment was forced to surrender during the Greek campaign, and he was held as a prisoner of war (POW) in Austria for four years. After the war, he resumed his acting career in repertory theatre, making his first television appearance in 1951 as the man in the pub in Surprise Attack, a short film commissioned by the Ministry of Health.
Dunn went on to appear in various TV shows, including The Tony Hancock Show, working alongside notable actors like Tony Hancock, Michael Bentine, Dora Bryan, and Dick Emery. His breakthrough role came in 1968 when he was cast as Lance Corporal Jones in Dad's Army, a role that brought him widespread recognition and acclaim.
After Dad's Army ended its nine-series run, Dunn capitalized on his reputation for playing elderly character roles by playing the lead character Charlie Quick in the slapstick children's TV series Grandad from 1979 to 1984.
