A Scottish rally driver who won the World Rally Championship in 1995 and was known for his aggressive and attacking driving style. He also had a popular video game series named after him.
Colin McRae, the British rally driver, is best known for becoming the first British driver to win the World Rally Championship (WRC) Drivers' title in 1995, and the youngest ever World Champion at just 27 years old, a record that stood until 2022.
Born on August 5, 1968, in Lanark, Scotland, to Jimmy and Margaret McRae, Colin was destined for greatness in the world of rallying. His father, Jimmy McRae, was a five-time winner of the British Rally Championship, and his maternal uncle, Hugh Shug Steele, was a former rally driver.
Colin's impressive performances in the early 1990s earned him the British Rally Championship titles in 1991 and 1992. His breakthrough came in 1995 when he joined the Subaru World Rally Team, with whom he won the WRC Drivers' title, along with three consecutive World Rally Championship Manufacturers' titles from 1995 to 1997.
Colin was married to Alison Hamilton, whom he met aged 19, and had two children, Hollie and Johnny. He was known for his close-knit family and was often seen with his father, Jimmy, at rallies.
In 2003, Colin retired from full-time rallying and moved to the Citroën World Rally Team. Although he didn't win an event, he helped the team win their first manufacturers' title. Tragically, Colin's life was cut short in a helicopter crash near his home in 2007, which also claimed the lives of his son, Johnny, and two family friends.
Colin McRae's legacy extends beyond his impressive list of achievements. He inspired a generation of rally drivers and enthusiasts, and his flamboyant driving style and fearless attitude on the roads earned him the nickname "McRae the Brave."
