Cornelius Krieghoff, a Dutch-born Canadian-American painter, is renowned for his captivating depictions of Canadian genre scenes, landscapes, and outdoor life. Krieghoff was born on June 19, 1815, in Amsterdam, Kingdom of the Netherlands, to Johann Ernst Krieghoff. His father, of German extraction, worked for Wilhem Sattler, establishing a wallpaper factory in Schloss Mainberg, a 12th-century castle overlooking the Main River. Krieghoff received his initial training from his father and later attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Germany around 1830.
In 1836, Krieghoff moved to New York and enlisted in the First Regiment of Artillery in the United States Army in 1837. During his time in the army, he sketched the Second Seminole War. He was discharged as a Corporal in 1840 and later traveled to Paris in 1844, where he honed his skills by copying masterpieces at the Louvre under the direction of Michel Martin Drolling.
Krieghoff settled in Montreal around 1846, where he co-founded the Montreal Society of Artists in 1847. He struck up a friendship with the Mohawks living on the Kahnawake Indian Reservation, making sketches that would later inspire his oil paintings. In 1853, he relocated to Quebec City with his wife, Émilie Gauthier, and daughter, Emily.
In 1854, Krieghoff returned to Europe, visiting Italy and Germany. He eventually settled back in Canada in 1855. Between 1863 and 1868, he lived in Europe once more before retiring to Chicago. It was in Chicago that he passed away on March 5, 1872, at the age of 56.
