Born on April 4, 1962, in Otley, Yorkshire, Adams grew up in Leeds and developed a passion for music from an early age. He left school to pursue a career in music, initially playing keyboards in a local band called The Expelairs.
After leaving The Expelairs due to musical differences, Adams took up bass and was inspired by Motörhead's sound. A chance conversation with Andrew Eldritch led to him joining The Sisters of Mercy, where he honed his songwriting skills, contributing to arrangements and providing backing vocals with his higher-ranged voice.
Disillusioned with The Sisters of Mercy, Adams and Wayne Hussey formed The Mission (initially known as The Sisterhood). Adams recorded four albums and two compilations with the band, playing a pivotal role in its success. However, his occasional destructive behavior caused instability within the lineup.
During the first North American tour, Adams broke his hand while punching a bus window and had to return to the UK to recover. Guitarist Simon Hinkler's departure during the Deliverance tour of 1990 signaled internal problems within the band. After the release of the 1992 album Masque, Adams was sacked due to personal differences with Hussey.
In 1993, Adams joined The Cult on a European tour, following an invitation from Billy Duffy. This marked a new chapter in his career, allowing him to explore different sounds and styles.
