Lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the indie rock band The Hold Steady, crafting vivid narratives and poetic lyrics that explore themes of youth, identity, and American culture.
Craig Finn is the renowned American singer-songwriter and musician behind the iconic indie rock band, The Hold Steady. With a distinctive voice and lyrical prowess, Finn has crafted a unique sound that has captivated audiences for over two decades.
Born on August 22, 1971, in Boston, Massachusetts, Finn grew up in Edina, Minnesota, and was raised Catholic. He attended Valley View Middle School and graduated from Breck School, later earning a bachelor's degree from Boston College in 1993. Before pursuing a music career, Finn worked as a financial broker for American Express Financial Advisors in Minneapolis.
In the early 1990s, Finn formed the band Lifter Puller, which marked the beginning of his musical journey. Alongside Tad Kubler, who would later join The Hold Steady, the band released three albums, two compilations, an EP, and several singles between 1994 and 2000. In 2009, their material was reissued digitally, accompanied by a book titled Lifter Puller vs. the End Of, featuring live material and the compilation Slip Backwards.
After moving to New York City in 2000, Finn took a two-year hiatus from music before forming The Hold Steady. The band's debut album, Almost Killed Me, was released in 2004, followed by eight more studio albums, including Separation Sunday, Boys and Girls in America, and Teeth Dreams. The Hold Steady's music is characterized by Finn's poetic lyrics, which often explore themes of love, relationships, and American culture.
In addition to his work with The Hold Steady, Finn has released five solo albums: Clear Heart Full Eyes (2012), Faith in the Future (2015), We All Want the Same Things (2017), I Need a New War (2019), and A Legacy of Rentals (2022). In 2022, Finn launched his podcast, That's How I Remember It, where he delves into the relationship between memory and creativity through conversations with fellow artists.
Finn's work has received widespread critical acclaim, with The Hold Steady's albums frequently featuring on "best of" lists. Pitchfork has praised Finn as a "born storyteller who's chosen rock as his medium," while his solo work has been described as "vivid and deeply personal" by Rolling Stone.
Finn currently resides in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, with his girlfriend, whom he began dating in 2006. As a Catholic, Finn's faith has influenced his music, which often touches on themes of spirituality and morality. Through his music and podcasting, Finn continues to inspire a new generation of musicians and music lovers alike, cementing his legacy as one of indie rock's most beloved and respected figures.
