Cristobal Huet is a French former professional ice hockey goaltender, best known for being the first French netminder and second French-trained player overall to play in the National Hockey League (NHL). He is also celebrated for winning the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks during the 2009-2010 NHL season, becoming the first Frenchman to do so as a player.
Huet was born on September 3, 1975, in Grenoble, France. As a youth, he participated in the 1988 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team from Grenoble.
Huet's professional career took off when he played for HC Lugano from the 1998-1999 season to 2001-2002. During this period, he won the National League A Championship in his first year and reached the European Hockey League final four the next year.
Huet was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings as their seventh-round pick, 214th overall, in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He played for the Kings in the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 seasons. In 2004, he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in a three-team deal.
During the 2004-2005 lockout, Huet played for the Adler Mannheim in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, leading the team to the finals. After the lockout, he returned to the NHL, eventually winning the starting job in goal for the Canadiens.
In 2008, Huet was traded to the Washington Capitals, but he only played a few games before being traded again to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2009. It was with the Blackhawks that he won the Stanley Cup in 2010.
After retiring from professional hockey, Huet became a goalie coach for Lausanne HC of the National League (NL). He also co-hosts the hockey TV show, Le Repas d'équipe, with fellow French-born Swiss former player Laurent Meunier on MySports.
