Crystal Bernard's early life was filled with music and performances. Born into a family of artists, her father, televangelist Jerry Wayne Bernard, traveled across the United States preaching and singing. Her mother, Gaylon (née Fussell) Bernard, was a teacher turned artist and sculptor. Crystal, along with her older sister Robyn (1959-2024), an actress, sang gospel songs at a young age. One of their earliest recordings, "The Monkey Song" on Feudin', Fussin', and Frettin', was made when Crystal was just eight years old during a 1972 Thomas Road Baptist Church service led by Jerry Falwell.
Crystal's passion for acting led her to study at the Alley Theatre while growing up in Houston, Texas. She attended Spring High School and furthered her education at Baylor University, where she majored in acting and international relations. Her breakthrough came when she played K.C.
