Born on February 10, 1980, in Caracas, Venezuela, Izturis was signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as an amateur free agent in 1996. He made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2001, showcasing a promising .269 average.
In 2002, Izturis was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he quickly established himself as a stalwart in the infield.
