Daba Modibo Keta is a Malian taekwondo athlete renowned for becoming the first Sub-Saharan African to win the World Taekwondo Championship title in 2007, claiming gold in the heavyweight 84 kg division in Beijing. Born on April 5, 1981, in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, to Malian parents, Keta's early life was marked by turmoil. Named after the first President of Mali, Modibo Keita, he was forced to flee his country with his family in 2000 during the wave of xenophobia that preceded the Ivorian Civil War. Settling in Mali, Keta faced financial struggles, but his determination to pursue taekwondo never wavered.
Keta's big break came when he received an IOC Olympic Solidarity Scholarship to train with Ivorian fighter Patrice Remarck in the United States. Under the guidance of coach Jorge F. Ramos, Keta's perseverance paid off, despite facing financial constraints that forced him to stay with friends in Beijing during the 2007 World Championship and train in a hotel courtyard.
Defying the odds, Keta overcame a torn back muscle to win the gold medal in the heavyweight 84 kg division at the 2007 World Taekwondo Championship in Beijing. This historic victory made him the first Sub-Saharan African to hold the title of Taekwondo World Champion, earning him a heroic welcome in Mali.
Keta's success has inspired a taekwondo boom in Mali, with the country boasting over 150 clubs federated to the Fédération malienne de taekwondo (FEMAT) and 500 black belts by 2008. He has become a national figure, making public appearances and meeting with the President Amadou Toumani Touré, who personally saw Keta off to the Olympics.
Keta represented Mali in both the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics in the 80 kg class, cementing his status as a pioneer for African athletes in the sport.
Managed by his older brother, Badra, Keta has lived and trained in France and the United States. Two of his brothers and two of his five sisters practice taekwondo, with his sisters both blue belts.
