Dan Dierdorf, the iconic American sportscaster and former football player, is best known for his illustrious 13-season career as an offensive tackle for the St. Louis Cardinals in the National Football League (NFL). Dierdorf's impressive skills on the field earned him numerous accolades, including three consecutive years as the NFL Players Association's Offensive Lineman of the Year from 1976 to 1978.
Born on June 29, 1949, in Canton, Ohio, Dierdorf grew up near the site of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He attended Glenwood High School (now GlenOak High School) in Canton, where he played football and competed in the discus throw and shot put. A lightly recruited prospect, Dierdorf went on to play college football for the Michigan Wolverines from 1968 to 1970.
During his time at Michigan, Dierdorf was selected as a consensus All-American in 1970 and a first-team All-Big Ten Conference player in 1969 and 1970. His outstanding performance earned him a place in the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 1996 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
Dierdorf's NFL career spanned 13 seasons, from 1971 to 1983, during which he played for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was an integral part of the team, earning six Pro Bowl selections between 1974 and 1980 and five first-team All-Pro selections. After retiring from football, Dierdorf transitioned to a successful broadcasting career. He worked for the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) from 1987 to 1999, including 12 seasons as a color analyst on Monday Night Football. Since 2014, Dierdorf has been the color analyst for Michigan Wolverines football radio broadcasts. His exceptional broadcasting skills earned him the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
