Califf's journey in soccer began at a young age, playing for Canyon Hills Soccer Association's Canyon Classic team, coached by his father. During his freshman year, he started all 24 games, earning a spot on the Soccer America All-Freshman team and helping the Terrapins reach the Final Four. In his sophomore year, he started 20 games and was named an NSCAA third-team All-American.
After his sophomore season, Califf signed a Project-40 contract with MLS and was selected sixth overall by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2000 MLS SuperDraft. He immediately became a starter for the Galaxy, appearing in 18 games and starting 16 as a rookie. Over the next three years, he solidified his position as one of the top central defenders in the league, starting 69 games and helping the team win the U.S. Open Cup in 2001 and the MLS Cup in 2002.
In 2005, Califf was traded to the San Jose Earthquakes, where he regained his form and was named to the MLS Best XI for the first time. He scored seven league goals and four assists in six years in MLS. After a successful stint with the Earthquakes, Califf left to sign with Aalborg in the Danish Superliga. In his first full season, he played 30 of 33 games, helping the team win bronze medals in the 2006-07 Superliga season.
Califf earned his first international cap for the United States in 2002 and went on to make 26 appearances for the national team. He was a member of the U.S. squad that competed in the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2007 Copa América. In 2006, he was named to the MLS Best XI for the second time, solidifying his position as one of the top defenders in the league.
