Born on June 14, 1951, in Ketchikan, Alaska, Edwards began his golfing journey at the tender age of 14. His natural talent soon propelled him to win the Oklahoma State High School Championship just four years later.
Edwards attended Oklahoma State University, where he was a four-year starter on the golf team. During his collegiate years, he won the 1972 and 1973 Big Eight Conference Championships and the 1972 North and South Amateur. He was also a three-time All-American and a member of the 1973 Walker Cup team, where he emerged as the lone unbeaten player.
Edwards turned professional in 1973 and joined the PGA Tour in 1975. He went on to win five official Tour events, with his first victory coming at the 1977 Greater Greensboro Open. He replicated this success by winning the same event again in 1982. His best finish in a major was T5 at the 1974 British Open, and he earned more than three dozen top-10 finishes in Tour events.
In a surprising turn of events, Edwards donned a racing helmet and won the June Sprints, one of the country's most prestigious automobile races, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, in 1982. This remarkable achievement made him the only PGA Tour professional to accomplish the crossover victory feat in both golf and auto racing.
In 1988, Edwards stepped away from competitive golf and founded Royal Grip Inc. in Scottsdale, Arizona. The company revolutionized the golf industry by advancing and improving golf grips. He later became the CEO of GreenFix Golf in 1998, a company that manufactures a tool for repairing ball marks on golf greens. In 2019, he founded The Royal Grip Company, further solidifying his impact on the golf equipment industry.
