Before pursuing a career in boxing, Nardico served in the United States Marine Corps, fighting in both World War II and the Korean War. For his bravery, he was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star for his actions in Okinawa in 1945.
After his service, Nardico began training as a boxer under the guidance of the legendary Willie Pep. His hard work and dedication paid off, as he quickly rose through the ranks. In December 1952, The Ring magazine ranked Nardico fifth in the light heavyweight class, just prior to his fight with Jake LaMotta. The highly anticipated bout took place on December 19, 1952, and Nardico made history by knocking down LaMotta in the seventh round. LaMotta's corner stopped the fight after that round, declaring Nardico the winner by technical knockout.
Nardico's boxing career spanned five years, ending in 1954. He retired with an impressive record of 50 wins, 13 losses, and four draws, with 35 of his wins coming by way of knockout. After hanging up his boxing gloves, Nardico briefly entered the world of professional wrestling, training under Chuck Benson in 1956. However, his wrestling career was short-lived, and he eventually retired from the sport altogether.
After his retirement from sports, Nardico worked as the recreational director at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center. In his later years, he was involved in a controversy surrounding the 1980 film Raging Bull, which told the story of Jake LaMotta's life. Nardico was angered by the omission of his historic knockdown of LaMotta from the film. He eventually moved to California, where he passed away on November 22, 2010, after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years. He is buried at Sunset Lawn Chapel of the Chimes.
