Born on July 5, 1982, in Augusta, Georgia, Haywood's musical roots run deep. His parents, Van and Angie Haywood, were both music enthusiasts who encouraged his early forays into music. His mother, a teacher, taught him to play piano, while his father, a dentist, instructed him on the guitar. The Haywood household was filled with music, as the family would often sing and play instruments together.
Haywood's family relocated to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for about a decade, during which time his father taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Dentistry. This move exposed Haywood to a diverse range of musical influences, which would later inform his songwriting style. He attended Riverside Middle School in Evans, Georgia, where he met his future bandmate, Charles Kelley. The two would later reunite at Lakeside High School, where Haywood graduated in 2000.
After high school, Haywood attended the University of Georgia, graduating in 2004. During this period, he was part of a jazz band with Charles Kelley's brother, Josh Kelley. Haywood's early music endeavors also included engineering and producing a CD for Mary Bragg titled Certain Simple Things, on which he cowrote, sang harmony vocals, and played instruments.
In 2006, Haywood, Kelley, and Hillary Scott formed Lady Antebellum in Nashville, Tennessee. The band's name was later changed to Lady A in 2020. As a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Haywood has been instrumental in creating the band's distinctive sound, which blends country, pop, and rock elements. Beyond Lady A, Haywood has cowritten hits like Luke Bryan's "Do I" and Miranda Lambert's "Love Song."
