Dave Madden: The Quirky Manager of The Partridge Family

For many, the name Dave Madden is synonymous with the lovable, if slightly exasperated, manager of the Partridge Family, Reuben Kincaid. His iconic role on the popular 1970s sitcom cemented his place in American pop culture, but Madden's life and career were far more diverse and fascinating than his most famous character.

Early Life and Career

Born on December 17, 1931, in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, Madden's early life was marked by turmoil and tragedy. After his father's death and his mother's busy schedule, he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Terre Haute, Indiana, at the age of nine. A serious bicycle accident at 13 left him immobile for months, during which time he developed a passion for magic. This interest would later influence his comedy act, which he performed around Terre Haute.

Madden attended Otter Creek High School, where he honed his writing skills as the joke editor of the school paper. After graduating in 1950, he spent a semester at Indiana State Teachers College before dropping out to enlist in the United States Air Force. During his time in the Air Force, he entertained troops in Tripoli, Libya, and even performed for Idris of Libya, the ruler at the time.

Rise to Fame

After the Air Force, Madden attended the University of Miami, graduating with a degree in communications in 1959. He then embarked on a career in comedy, performing on the Southern nightclub circuit before moving to Los Angeles. A successful opening night at a Beverly Hills nightclub led to a 10-week retention, and a recommendation from Frank Sinatra secured him three nights on The Ed Sullivan Show.

These appearances led to more opportunities, including a role on The Partridge Family, which premiered in 1970. Madden's portrayal of Reuben Kincaid, the hapless manager of the fictional family rock band, earned him a permanent place in the hearts of audiences. He went on to appear in over 100 episodes of the show, becoming an integral part of its success.

Later Career and Legacy

After The Partridge Family, Madden continued to work in television, landing a recurring role as diner customer Earl Hicks on the sitcom Alice. He also made guest appearances on various shows, including The Love Boat and Fantasy Island.

In addition to his acting career, Madden was a talented magician and performed at various charity events throughout his life. He was also an advocate for the American Cancer Society, participating in several fundraising campaigns.

Dave Madden passed away on January 16, 2014, leaving behind a legacy as a beloved character actor and a true entertainer. His quirky charm and humor continue to delight audiences to this day, ensuring his place as an American pop culture icon.
