Born on May 10, 1946, in Worcester, England, Mason's love for music was apparent from an early age. He began playing the guitar at 14 and soon formed his first band, The Hellions, with friends Chris Wood and Jim Capaldi. This led to the formation of Traffic in 1967, alongside Steve Winwood and Chris Wood.
Mason's time with Traffic was marked by periods of departure and return. After leaving the band following the release of their debut album, Mr. Fantasy (1967), he rejoined during the sessions for their second album, Traffic (1968). He left again, only to briefly rejoin in 1971 for their live album, Welcome to the Canteen.
In between his stints with Traffic, Mason pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album, Alone Together (1970). He achieved significant success with his 1977 single, "We Just Disagree," written by Jim Krueger, which became a staple of U.S. classic hits and adult contemporary radio playlists.
Mason's collaborative spirit has led to work with an impressive array of legendary musicians, including Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson, David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Fleetwood Mac, among others.
