Born on September 17, 1957, in Huddersfield, England, Bintley began his professional training in classical ballet at the Royal Ballet School in London. During his time at the school, his choreography caught the attention of Sir Frederick Ashton, founder choreographer and artistic director of The Royal Ballet.
In 1976, Bintley joined the Sadlers Wells Theatre Ballet, now the Birmingham Royal Ballet, where he received his first commission as a choreographer in 1978, creating the ballet The Outsider. He went on to become the resident choreographer of The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in 1985. Throughout his career, Bintley has created numerous works for the Royal Ballet, BRB, and as an international guest choreographer.
