Lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Disturbed, known for powerful, wide-ranging vocals and hits like "Down with the Sickness" and "Land of Confusion".
Known for his powerful, distorted baritone voice and percussive singing style, David Draiman is the lead vocalist of the iconic heavy metal band Disturbed. With a career spanning over two decades, he has written some of the band's most successful singles, including "Stupify," "Down with the Sickness," "Indestructible," and "Inside the Fire."
David Michael Draiman was born on March 13, 1973, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City to Jewish parents. His early life was marked by his parents' strong Jewish faith, and he was sent to Orthodox schools, where he believed he was on the path to receiving rabbinic ordination. He attended five Jewish day schools, including Valley Torah High School in Los Angeles and the Wisconsin Institute for Torah Study in Milwaukee.
In 1996, Draiman formed Disturbed with guitarist Dan Donegan, bassist Steve Kmak, and drummer Mike Wengren. The band's debut album, The Sickness, was released in 2000 and became a massive commercial success, selling over 4 million copies in the United States alone. The album's lead single, "Down with the Sickness," became a nu-metal anthem and propelled the band to stardom.
Despite not being personally observant of his Jewish faith, Draiman's upbringing has had a significant impact on his worldview and lyrical themes. He has often explored topics such as spirituality, morality, and personal struggle in his music. In an interview, he stated, "I think that's one of the reasons why I'm drawn to writing about these kinds of things, because it's a way of questioning and seeking answers."
In 2006, Draiman was ranked at No. 42 on the Hit Parader list of Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time. He has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards with Disturbed, including Best Hard Rock Performance and Best Metal Performance.
Draiman's music and iconic vocals have inspired a generation of metalheads and musicians. He has been cited as an influence by bands such as Killswitch Engage and Trivium, and has collaborated with artists like Megadeth and Avenged Sevenfold.
In 2011, Disturbed went on hiatus, during which time Draiman worked on his side project, Device. The band reunited in 2015 and has since released two more albums. Draiman's father, YJ, has also made headlines, running for Mayor of Los Angeles in 2013, 2017, and 2022.
