Born on August 5, 1948, Hungate is the son of judge William L. Hungate. He grew up with a passion for music and went on to become a sought-after session musician in the 1970s. His work as a session musician led him to meet his future Toto bandmates, including David Paich and Jeff Porcaro.
Hungate's association with Toto began when he was approached by Paich and Porcaro to start a band. Although initially hesitant, he joined the band as the bassist, while continuing to work as a session musician. Interestingly, it was Hungate who came up with the name "Toto" for the band.
During his first stint with Toto, Hungate played on the band's first four records, including the Grammy award-winning album Toto IV. His impressive bass playing skills were an integral part of the band's sound and success during this period.
In 1981, Hungate left Toto to pursue a career as a session musician in Nashville. He relocated to the city to escape the declining session work in Los Angeles and to provide a better environment for his family.
In Nashville, Hungate worked with several country artists, including Chet Atkins, and also became a primary member of the AOR supergroup Mecca, fronted by Joe Vana and Fergie Frederiksen. In 1990, he released a solo album entitled Souvenir, which featured Jeff Porcaro on drums.
