Born on September 19, 1963, in Rotherham, West Riding of Yorkshire, Seaman attended Kimberworth Comprehensive School and began his career at Leeds United, the club he supported as a boy. However, he was not wanted by then-manager Eddie Gray, and instead joined Fourth Division club Peterborough United.
Seaman's big break came when he joined Birmingham City in 1984, and then Queens Park Rangers in 1986, before making his way to Arsenal in 1990. It was during his time at Arsenal that Seaman won three league championships (1991, 1998, 2002), four FA Cups (1993, 1998, 2002, 2003), the League Cup in 1993, and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1994.
Seaman made his debut for England in 1988 and went on to play in the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups, as well as Euro 96 and Euro 2000. He played a significant role in England's campaigns, earning 75 caps and becoming the country's second-most capped goalkeeper.
In 1997, Seaman was awarded the MBE for services to football. He retired in 2004 due to a recurring shoulder injury. In June 2012, he was appointed goalkeeping coach of Combined Counties League club Wembley.
