A French professional footballer who played as a defender, known for his career with clubs like Bordeaux and Manchester City.
David Sommeil is a retired professional footballer from Guadeloupe, who made a name for himself in the French and English leagues as a skilled defender. Born on August 10, 1974, in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, Sommeil's career spanned over a decade, during which he played for several prominent clubs, including Caen, Rennes, Bordeaux, Manchester City, and Sheffield United.
Sommeil's professional career began with SM Caen in 1994, before he moved to Rennes and eventually Bordeaux, where he caught the attention of French scouts. His impressive performances earned him a call-up to the French B team, solidifying his reputation as a talented defender.
In 2003, Sommeil made the leap to the Premier League, joining Manchester City under the guidance of Kevin Keegan. Although his initial stint was marred by injuries and limited playing time, he managed to score a league goal at the City of Manchester Stadium, becoming the first Manchester City player to do so.
In 2004, Sommeil was loaned to Olympique Marseille, where he regained his form and confidence. The deal also brought Daniel Van Buyten to England on loan. Upon his return to Manchester City, Sommeil faced stiff competition and was eventually released in 2006, after less than 50 appearances for the club.
Sommeil didn't stay unemployed for long, signing a two-year contract with newly promoted Sheffield United in May 2006. Although he faced challenges, including a fractured cheekbone and a three-game ban, he remained a valuable asset to the team.
Sommeil's national team career was marked by eight caps for Guadeloupe, including an appearance in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup. His contributions to the team earned him recognition as one of the most skilled defenders to emerge from the Caribbean island.
Sommeil retired from professional football in 2008, after a brief stint with Valenciennes. Since then, he has maintained a low profile, opting to keep his personal life private. Despite his relatively quiet post-football life, Sommeil's legacy as a talented and tenacious defender continues to inspire aspiring footballers from Guadeloupe and beyond.
