Frontman of the influential punk band Scratch Acid and later The Jesus Lizard, known for his intense and unpredictable live performances.
David Yow, born on August 2, 1960, is an American musician and actor, best known as the vocalist for the influential noise rock bands Scratch Acid and the Jesus Lizard. His unmistakable, ear-piercing screams and incoherent stage antics have made him a legend in the music world.
In 1982, Yow formed Scratch Acid, a punk-noise rock group based in Austin, Texas. The initial lineup consisted of Steve Anderson on vocals, David Wm. Sims on guitar, Brett Bradford on guitar, Yow on bass, and Rey Washam on drums. After Anderson's departure, Yow took over vocal duties, and Sims moved to bass. The band released three albums and gained a strong following before disbanding in 1987.
Yow and Sims went on to form the Jesus Lizard in 1987, along with guitarist Duane Denison. The trio relocated to Chicago in 1989 and used a drum machine for their early recordings and performances. They added drummer Mac McNeilly after recording their first EP, Pure. Yow's unpredictable live performances, often fueled by heavy drinking, became the stuff of legend.
The Jesus Lizard released six studio albums, three EPs, and a live album before disbanding in 1999. In 1995, Yow collaborated with Helmet on a cover version of "Custard Pie" for the tribute album Encomium: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin. In 2006, Yow officially joined the Los Angeles-based band Qui as a full-time member, after playing several shows as a special guest.
In 2006, Yow, Sims, Washam, and Bradford reformed Scratch Acid for the Touch and Go Records 25th Anniversary Festival in Chicago. They also performed a series of reunion shows in Austin, Chicago, and Seattle. In 2013, Yow released his debut solo album, Tonight You Look Like a Spider, on Joyful Noise Records.
David Yow's impact on the music world is undeniable. His unique vocal style and stage presence have influenced countless bands, including Pavement, Sonic Youth, and Nirvana. The Jesus Lizard's music has been cited as an inspiration by artists such as Steve Albini and Trent Reznor.
"I enjoyed writing songs and acting like an idiot with those guys to make enough money to support ourselves." - David Yow on touring with the Jesus Lizard
