Born on November 16, 1916, in Toledo, Ohio, Butler was the only child of Charles Allen Butler and Ruth Butler. The family later moved to Oak Park, Illinois, where Butler developed an interest in impersonating people. This early fascination would eventually lead him to become a master of voice acting.
In 1935, Butler began performing as an impressionist, entering amateur contests and winning most of them. This was not only a testament to his talent but also a personal challenge to overcome his shyness. He subsequently won professional engagements at vaudeville theaters and teamed up with fellow performers Jack Lavin and Willard Ovitz, forming the comedy trio The Three Short Waves.
In 1941, Butler joined the U.S. Navy as America entered World War II. During this time, he met his future wife, Myrtis, at a wartime function near Washington, D.C. After the war, Butler began his voice work for animated characters, starting with the animated short Short Snorts on Sports in 1948.
Tex Avery, a renowned animator, hired Butler to provide the voice of a British wolf in the cartoon short Little Rural Riding Hood in 1949. This collaboration marked the beginning of Butler's long-term association with Hanna-Barbera, which would go on to produce some of the most beloved cartoons of our time.
