Dean Pitchford is a renowned American songwriter, screenwriter, director, actor, and novelist, whose work has earned him an impressive array of accolades, including an Oscar and a Golden Globe Award. He is perhaps best known for penning the hit song "Fame," which catapulted to the top of the charts in 1980 and became an anthem for aspiring artists.
Born on July 29, 1951, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Pitchford attended Catholic schools and graduated from Saint Louis High School in 1968. He began his performance career as an actor and singer with the Honolulu Community Theatre, the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, and the Honolulu Theatre for Youth, among others.
While studying at Yale University, Pitchford performed with numerous campus drama groups, eventually focusing on off-campus projects with the Wooster Square Revival, an experimental theatre company that offered acting opportunities to recovering addicts and alcoholics.
In the early 1970s, Pitchford was cast in the off-Broadway musical Godspell in New York City, followed by a stint in the Broadway production of Pippin in 1975. It was during this time that he began to develop his songwriting skills, performing his early efforts in cabarets around Manhattan.
His talents soon caught the attention of prominent composers, including Stephen Schwartz, Alan Menken, and Rupert Holmes, with whom he collaborated on various projects. In 1979, he teamed up with Peter Allen to write new songs for the Broadway revue Up in One.
Pitchford's breakthrough came with the release of "Fame," which was featured in the 1980 film of the same name. The song's massive success led to a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, as well as an Academy Award nomination.
His subsequent collaborations with composer Michael Gore resulted in hits like "Flashdance... What a Feeling" and "Don't You (Forget About Me)," both of which earned him additional Oscar and Golden Globe nominations.
In addition to his Oscar and Golden Globe wins, Pitchford has received multiple Grammy nominations and has won two Tony Awards for his work on Footloose and Fame.
