Harris then attended Milligan College, where he excelled as a 3-time All-Conference basketball player and earned a bachelor's degree in religious studies cum laude in 1959. He later obtained a master's degree in history from Indiana University in 1965.
Harris embarked on his coaching journey in the junior high school ranks in Johnson City, Tennessee, before returning to his native Indiana. Over four years, he built an impressive record of 54-15, securing two conference titles and a sectional title at three different high schools. His success continued at Earlham College, where he was hired in 1965.
