Coderre hails from a humble background, born to Elphege Coderre, a carpenter, and Lucie Baillargeon in Joliette, Quebec. He moved to Montral-Nord in 1973, where he attended cole Secondaire Henri-Bourassa and Cgep Marie-Victorin. Coderre's academic pursuits took him to the Universit de Montral, where he earned a BA in political science, and later to the University of Ottawa, where he obtained a Master's in Business Administration (MBA).
Coderre's foray into federal politics was not without its challenges. He ran unsuccessfully three times before finally being elected as a Member of Parliament in 1997.
