Born on November 25, 1997, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Smith attended Trinity Christian School, where he honed his basketball skills. In his freshman year, he came off the bench on the varsity basketball team, averaging 9.2 points and 3.0 assists per game.
As a sophomore, Smith led Trinity Christian to win the 2014 NCISAA 1A State Championship, scoring 21 points and earning MVP honors. He averaged 17.6 points, 9.3 assists, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.4 steals per game during the season.
Smith attended North Carolina State University for one season of college basketball, earning second-team all-conference honors in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) as a freshman and ACC Freshman of the Year.
In the 2017 NBA draft, Smith was selected ninth overall by the Dallas Mavericks.
Smith spent two seasons with the Mavericks before being traded to the New York Knicks in January 2019. He was then traded to the Detroit Pistons in February 2021 and later joined the Portland Trail Blazers as a free agent in September of the same year.
After being waived by the Blazers in February 2022 due to a right elbow injury, Smith signed with the Charlotte Hornets in the 2022 offseason. He signed with the Brooklyn Nets in July 2023.
