Denny Laine, born Brian Frederick Hines, is a renowned English musician and songwriter, best known for co-founding two of the most influential rock bands of all time: the Moody Blues and Wings. Born on October 29, 1944, in Tyseley, Birmingham, England, Laine's musical journey began at a tender age. Inspired by Django Reinhardt's gypsy jazz, he took up the guitar and gave his first solo performance at just 12 years old. He went on to form Denny Laine and the Diplomats, which included future drummer Bev Bevan, with whom he would later collaborate in various projects.
In 1964, Laine co-founded the Moody Blues, along with Ray Thomas, John Lodge, Graeme Edge, and Mike Pinder. During his tenure with the band, he played guitar and sang lead vocals on their hit cover version of "Go Now." Although he left the Moody Blues in 1966, his contributions to the band's early sound remain significant.
Laine's friendship with Paul McCartney, which began in 1963, led to an invitation to join Wings in 1971. As a constant member of Wings until 1981, Laine played guitar, bass, keyboards, and sang backing and lead vocals, co-writing songs with McCartney, including the 1977 hit "Mull of Kintyre." This collaboration resulted in some of Wings' most iconic tracks, solidifying Laine's status as a musical virtuoso.
In addition to his work with the Moody Blues and Wings, Laine maintained a prolific solo career, releasing 10 studio albums of original music, a Wings covers album, and even writing a musical. He continued to perform as a solo artist and touring musician until his passing. Laine's contributions to the music world were recognized in 2018, when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Moody Blues.
