Before donning the Wolfpack uniform, Whittenburg was a high school sensation at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. Under the tutelage of legendary coach Morgan Wootten, Whittenburg formed a dynamic backcourt duo with Sidney Lowe, leading DeMatha to a national championship in his junior year. During his four-year tenure, DeMatha suffered only 12 losses, a testament to Whittenburg's exceptional skill and dedication.
Whittenburg's decision to attend NC State was influenced by his cousin, NBA great David Thompson, who had won a national championship with the Wolfpack in 1974.
