Johnson's academic pursuits took her to Northwich County Grammar School for Girls, Sir John Deane's College, and eventually, Queen Mary University of London, where she earned an LLB in Law.
Before entering parliament, Johnson worked as a barrister and was a councillor in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets from 1994 to 2002. During this period, she served as Chair of Social Services. In 2001, she stood as a candidate in the Brentwood and Ongar constituency, although unsuccessful, she didn't let it deter her. In 2003, she became a member of the London Assembly, filling the vacancy left by Trevor Phillips.
