Born Dirk Niewoehner on March 1, 1945, in Helena, Montana, Benedict grew up in White Sulphur Springs, Montana. He graduated from Whitman College in 1967 and later adopted the stage name "Benedict" after a serving of Eggs Benedict he had prior to his acting career.
Benedict's film debut was in the 1972 film Georgia, Georgia, followed by appearances in Sssssss (1973), W (1974), and Chopper One (1974). His breakthrough role came in 1978 when he played Lieutenant Starbuck in the movie and television series Battlestar Galactica.
In the 1980s, Benedict starred alongside Linda Blair in the action-comedy movie Ruckus (1980) and gained further popularity as con man Templeton "Faceman" Peck in The A-Team (1983-1987). Throughout his career, Benedict has made numerous guest appearances on popular television shows, including Hawaii Five-O, Charlie's Angels, and The Donny & Marie variety show.
In addition to his acting career, Benedict is also an author, having written two books: Confessions of a Kamikaze Cowboy and And Then We Went Fishing.
