An American soldier, police officer, and actor who appeared in numerous TV shows and films, including the iconic sci-fi series "Land of the Giants". He's most recognized for his rugged, heroic roles.
Best known for his iconic role in Irwin Allen's science fiction series Land of the Giants, Don Matheson was an American soldier, policeman, and television actor who left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.
Before entering the world of acting, Matheson served in the military, where he was awarded the prestigious Bronze Star for valorous leadership and a Purple Heart for injuries suffered in an explosion during his time in Korea. After six years of service, he joined the Detroit Police Department, where he honed his skills as a law enforcement officer.
Leaving law enforcement behind, Matheson began his career in acting, making his debut in the 1965 episode "The Sky Is Falling" of Lost in Space, where he played the nonspeaking role of the alien Retho. He went on to appear in various television episodes, commercials, and plays, eventually landing a role in the science fiction series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea in 1967.
Matheson's big break came when he was signed to join the cast of Land of the Giants, a role that would catapult him to fame. His portrayal of Mark Wilson, a brave and resourceful astronaut, earned him a loyal fan base and critical acclaim.
Matheson married his Land of the Giants co-star Deanna Lund in 1970, but the couple divorced in the late 1970s. They had a daughter, Michele Matheson, who went on to become an actress and novelist. Matheson later married actress Maxine Arnold.
Don Matheson passed away on June 29, 2014, at the age of 84, due to complications from lung cancer. His legacy as a talented actor and brave war hero continues to inspire generations, and his iconic role in Land of the Giants remains an integral part of science fiction history.
