Born on November 24, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee, Dunn's fascination with music began at a young age. His father, a carpenter, nicknamed him "Duck" while watching Disney cartoons together. Growing up, Dunn played sports and rode bikes with his friend Steve Cropper, who would later become a famous guitarist.
In high school, Cropper began playing guitar with their friend Charlie Freeman, inspiring Dunn to learn the bass guitar. Along with drummer Terry Johnson, the four formed the Royal Spades, which later evolved into the MarKeys after adding keyboardist Jerry Lee Smoochy Smith, singer Ronnie Angel, and a horn section.
In 1962, Cropper and Booker T. Jones founded Booker T. & the M.G.'s, with Dunn on bass and Al Jackson on drums. This legendary quartet would go on to shape the sound of Stax Records, producing hits like "Green Onions," "Time is Tight," and "Hip Hug-Her."
