Swann attended Dulwich College Preparatory School and Westminster School, where he first met his future partner, Michael Flanders. In 1941, he was awarded an exhibition to Christ Church, Oxford, to read modern languages.
During World War II, Swann registered as a conscientious objector and served with the Friends Ambulance Unit, a Quaker relief organization, in Egypt, Palestine, and Greece. This experience had a profound impact on his life and later influenced his music.
Flanders and Swann's partnership began in the 1950s, with Swann composing the music and Flanders writing the lyrics.
