Levens was born in Syracuse, New York, and attended Nottingham High School. He then went on to play college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, where he faced stiff competition at the running back position from future NFL stars Ricky Watters, Jerome Bettis, and Anthony Johnson, among others. Despite the challenges, Levens managed to earn the starting spot, only to suffer a knee injury before the season started.
