Known for his significant contributions to the Catholic Church, Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy was an Indian cardinal who served as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches in the Roman Curia. Born on February 5, 1924, in Kalleri, Archdiocese of Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu, India, Lourdusamy was the seventh of twelve children to Annamarie and Duraisamy Simeon. His early education took place at St. Anne's in Tindivanam, followed by high school studies at St. Joseph Higher School in Cuddalore. He then entered St. Agnes Minor Seminary in Cuddalore and completed his major seminary education in Philosophy and Theology at St. Peter's Pontifical Seminary in Bangalore from 1946 to 1951.
Lourdusamy's episcopical motto, "Aedificare domum Dei" or "To build the house of God," reflected his commitment to his faith and his dedication to serving the Church. He enjoyed a close relationship with several popes, including Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul I, and Pope John Paul II, with whom he worked closely for 26 years in various capacities.
Through his various roles, Lourdusamy played a significant part in the implementation of Vatican II Council reforms in India, leading others to do the same. His elder brother, D. S. Amalorpavadass, a priest and theologian, was also instrumental in this process.
Lourdusamy received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the Catholic Church, including his elevation to the cardinalate in 1985.
