Earl Blumenauer is a name synonymous with the city of Portland, Oregon, and environmental advocacy. As the U.S. Representative for Oregon's 3rd congressional district since 1996, Blumenauer has dedicated his life to serving his community and fighting for a sustainable future.

A Native Son of Portland

Born on August 16, 1948, in Portland, Oregon, Blumenauer graduated from Centennial High School in 1966. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from Lewis & Clark College in 1970, and later, a Juris Doctor degree from the Northwestern School of Law (now Lewis & Clark Law School) in 1976.

Early Political Career

Blumenauer's entry into politics began with his role as an assistant to the president of Portland State University from 1970 to 1977. In 1969-1970, he organized and led Oregon's "Go 19" campaign, an effort to lower the state voting age, which, although unsuccessful, contributed to the national trend that ultimately led to the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, lowering the voting age to 18.

A Decade of Service in the Oregon Legislature

In 1972, Blumenauer was elected to the Oregon House of Representatives, representing the 11th district in Multnomah County. He was reelected in 1974 and 1976, serving until the 1979 legislative session. During this period, he also served on the board of Portland Community College from 1975 to 1981.

A Commitment to Community

Before his election to Congress, Blumenauer served on the Multnomah County Commission from 1979 to 1986, and later, on the Portland City Council from 1987 to 1996. His dedication to his community was evident in his efforts to revitalize Portland's neighborhoods, promote affordable housing, and address homelessness.

In 1996, Blumenauer succeeded Ron Wyden in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Oregon's 3rd congressional district. Since then, he has become a prominent voice on environmental issues, transportation policy, and civic engagement.
