He was drafted by the New Jersey Nets with the 7th overall pick in 2001, but was immediately traded to the Houston Rockets. He played for the Rockets from 2001 to 2003, averaging 8.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.84 blocks per game in his rookie year.
In 2003, Griffin was traded to the New Jersey Nets, where he played for two seasons before being waived in 2005. He then signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2006, but was waived again in 2007.
Griffin struggled with alcoholism and had a history of getting into fights, including one with a teammate in high school and another with a teammate at Seton Hall. He also had a tragic personal loss when his half-brother Marvin Powell died of a heart attack in 2001.
Eddie Griffin's life was cut short in a car accident on August 17, 2007, at the age of 25.
