Eddie Lawrence, born Lawrence Eisler, was an American monologist, actor, singer, lyricist, playwright, artist, director, and television personality, best known for his iconic creation, The Old Philosopher, which captivated audiences for over five decades. This beloved character brought laughter and joy to millions, and cemented Lawrence's place as a master of wit and storytelling.
Lawrence began his career as a young man, performing in small clubs in the New York area and on the Borscht Belt circuit in the Catskills. His unique style of comedic storytelling and elocution soon gained him a minor reputation as an original comic raconteur.
One of his earliest recorded performances was on Major Bowes Amateur Hour in 1943, where he showcased his World War II-themed comic impressions of Charles Boyer, Ronald Colman, Roland Young, and Clem McCarthy. This performance was later included in the 1959 LP Original Amateur Hour 25th Anniversary Album.
In the early 1950s, Lawrence moved to Paris to study painting under the renowned artist Fernand Léger. During this time, he signed his paintings with his birth name, Lawrence Eisler.
By the mid-1950s, Lawrence had returned to the United States and began to appear in clubs of minor reputation, honing his comic timing, and taking on bit parts in numerous live television productions in New York. His big break came when he landed a role in the second revival of The Threepenny Opera, which opened at the Off-Broadway Theater de Lys in 1955.
Lawrence sang the role of Macheath's henchman, Crook-Finger Jack, and was part of the original cast. The production ran for an impressive six years, with a total of 2611 performances, finally closing on December 17, 1961. Although Lawrence only stayed with the production for less than a year, it marked a significant milestone in his career.
The Old Philosopher, Lawrence's most iconic creation, was born during this period. With his unique blend of humor, wit, and satire, The Old Philosopher became a cult classic, entertaining audiences for generations to come.
Throughout his long and storied career, Lawrence continued to work in various mediums, including television, film, and theater. He remained true to his artistic vision, always seeking to push boundaries and challenge his audiences.
