Edwin Albert Link, a pioneer in aviation, underwater archaeology, and submersibles, is renowned for inventing the flight simulator, a revolutionary innovation that transformed the aviation industry. The "Blue Box" or Link Trainer, as it came to be known, was commercialized in 1929, marking the beginning of a multibillion-dollar industry.
Born on July 26, 1904, in Huntington, Indiana, Edwin Link was the son of Edwin A. Link, Sr., and Katherine Martin Link. In 1910, his family moved to Binghamton, New York, where his fascination with aviation began to take shape. Growing up, he was exposed to the workings of his father's automatic piano and organ factory, the Link Piano and Organ Company, which would later inspire his inventions.
Link's passion for flying led him to take his first flying lesson in 1920. He obtained the first Cessna airplane ever delivered in 1927 and began his career as a barnstormer, charter flyer, and flying instructor. It was during this time that he employed his creativity to create an advertising airplane using parts from his father's factory. The innovative aircraft featured a punched roll and pneumatic system that controlled sequential lights on the wings to spell out messages, accompanied by a set of small but loud organ pipes.
In the 1920s, Link developed the Link Trainer, a fuselage-like device that simulated the motions and sensations of flying. By adapting pneumatic systems from the organ factory, he created a realistic and immersive experience for pilots-in-training.
In 1929, Link founded the Link Aeronautical Corporation to manufacture the trainers. Initially, his customers were amusement parks, but it wasn't until 1934 that the United States Army Air Corps recognized the value of the Link Trainer, purchasing six units. During World War II, the demand for Link Trainers skyrocketed, with over half a million aircrew trained on the simulators.
Throughout his career, Edwin Link obtained more than 27 patents for his inventions in aeronautics, navigation, and oceanographic equipment. His pioneering work in flight simulation paved the way for significant advancements in aviation, saving countless lives, and reducing the risks associated with pilot training.
