Born on March 19, 1960, in São Paulo, Brazil, Elias began studying piano at the tender age of seven. Her prodigious talent was soon apparent, and by twelve, she was transcribing solos from jazz legends. At fifteen, she started teaching piano, and at seventeen, she began performing with Brazilian singer-songwriter Toquinho and touring with the poet Vinicius de Moraes.
In 1981, Elias moved to New York City, where she attended The Juilliard School of Music. A year later, she became part of the renowned group Steps Ahead, marking the beginning of her journey in the global jazz scene. During this period, Elias developed her unique style, blending Brazilian rhythms with jazz improvisation.
In 1993, Elias signed with EMI Classics, recording classical pieces that were released on On the Classical Side. This venture showcased her versatility as a musician, demonstrating her ability to effortlessly transition between jazz and classical genres.
The 2000s marked a significant milestone in Elias' career. Her album Dreamer (2004) received the Gold Disc Award and was voted Best Vocal Album in Japan. It reached No. 3 on the pop charts in France and No. 4 on the Billboard magazine charts in the U.S. This success was followed by Around the City (2006) and Something for You (2007), which won Best Vocal Album of the Year and the Gold Disc Award in Japan.
In 2008, Elias released Bossa Nova Stories, a tribute to the 50th anniversary of bossa nova. This album further solidified her reputation as a master of Brazilian jazz. Subsequent releases, such as Eliane Elias Plays Live (2009) and Light My Fire (2011), continued to showcase her innovative approach to jazz.
